Musk’s xAI Files Lawsuit Against Apple and OpenAI
Elon Musk’s companies, xAI and X Corp., have filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI. The suit alleges that the two giants have colluded to stifle competition in AI by integrating ChatGPT deeply into Apple’s ecosystem, thereby disadvantaging rival platforms like xAI’s Grok chatbot.
Unfair Advantage Alleged
The lawsuit claims that Apple’s exclusive inclusion of ChatGPT in its iOS and related operating systems gives OpenAI access to a vast pool of user prompts—an advantage unavailable to competitors. Further, Musk accuses Apple of deprioritizing Grok and other AI apps in App Store rankings, especially in highlighted sections like “Must-Have Apps,” dampening their exposure and growth.
Market Monopolization Concern
According to the filing, Apple and OpenAI are exerting monopolistic control over both the smartphone and generative AI markets, trying to suppress innovation and limit consumer choice. Musk’s legal team seeks injunctive relief to stop the alleged anticompetitive conduct and damages amounting to billions of dollars.
Responses and Ongoing Tensions
OpenAI dismissed the lawsuit as part of an “ongoing pattern of harassment” by Musk. Apple has argued that its App Store policies remain fair and impartial. The case adds another chapter to Musk’s long-standing legal confrontations with OpenAI, which began over concerns about the company’s shift from nonprofit to for-profit status.
