Musk Says EU Should Be Abolished After X Is Fined
Elon Musk has said that the European Union should be abolished after his platform X was fined €120 million for violating the Digital Services Act. The penalty was issued by the European Commission over issues linked to verification policies, advertising transparency and access to public data.
X is the first major platform to face a penalty under the new rules.
What Led To The Fine
Regulators said X misled users by offering paid verification without proper identity checks. The platform was also accused of failing to maintain a clear record of advertisements and denying researchers access to public data, both of which are required under the DSA.
The European Commission said the fine was proportionate and necessary to ensure compliance among large tech platforms.
Musk’s Reaction And Growing Dispute
Soon after the announcement, Musk posted that the “EU should be abolished” and called the bloc a “bureaucratic monster.” He argued the decision was unfair and targeted American technology companies.
Officials in Brussels said their focus was regulation, not politics, and that companies operating in Europe must follow the law.
Next Steps For X
The platform has 60 days to present corrective measures to regulators. Failure to comply could lead to further penalties. The issue has fuelled a wider debate about tech regulation, free speech and the powers of supranational institutions.
The clash is expected to continue as X contests the ruling and public pressure increases over transparency and platform safety.
