Musk Launches AI-Powered ‘Grokipedia’ to Rival Wikipedia

Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk has unveiled a new online encyclopedia called Grokipedia, developed by his company xAI, that features content generated entirely by artificial intelligence and positions itself as a competitor to Wikipedia. The platform launched on October 27, 2025, with more than 800,000 entries, and aims to deliver what Musk described as “truthful” alternatives to existing encyclopedic knowledge.

Key Features of Grokipedia

Grokipedia uses AI models to create its articles, with review and fact-checking overseen by xAI’s chatbot Grok. Unlike Wikipedia’s open-editor model, users cannot directly edit entries but can flag problems. The platform sources many entries from existing Wikipedia content under the necessary Creative Commons licences, with additional AI-generated additions.

Strategic Significance

Musk has frequently criticised Wikipedia for alleged political bias and reliance on mainstream media. Grokipedia is framed as his answer to those concerns, aiming to provide alternative perspectives and challenge Wikipedia’s dominance in online reference material. The launch comes amid growing interest in AI-generated content and debates about reliability, bias and editorial control in digital information.

Outlook and Challenges

While Grokipedia has garnered attention, it faces skepticism over accuracy, transparency and independence. Experts note that AI-generated content may replicate existing biases or introduce new ones, and that building a credible encyclopedia requires rigorous editorial standards and wide-ranging expertise. With initial criticism over technical glitches and content overlap with Wikipedia, the next phase will test whether Grokipedia can establish itself as a reliable knowledge platform.
