Murshidabad Erupts Over Waqf Act; 3 Dead, 118 Arrested

Murshidabad district in West Bengal witnessed severe unrest following protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025. The demonstrations escalated into violence, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including a father and son who were reportedly hacked to death by a mob in the Jafrabad area. Additionally, a person injured by gunfire in Samserganj succumbed to injuries; authorities are investigating the source of the gunfire, with some reports suggesting possible involvement of the Border Security Force (BSF).

The protests, initially peaceful, turned violent with incidents of arson, vandalism, and attacks on public property. Demonstrators set ablaze police vehicles, disrupted train services by blocking tracks and pelting stones, and attacked the office of a local Member of Parliament.

Waqf Act Protests

The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025, introduced significant changes to the administration of Waqf properties, leading to widespread criticism from various communities who viewed it as an infringement on religious freedoms. In West Bengal, the Act sparked intense opposition, particularly in Muslim-majority areas like Murshidabad. Despite assurances from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that the Act would not be implemented in the state, protests intensified, culminating in violent clashes.

Bengal Unrest

In response to the escalating violence, the Calcutta High Court ordered the immediate deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in Murshidabad to restore order. So far, 118 individuals have been arrested in connection with the unrest, and police raids are ongoing to apprehend others involved.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee appealed for peace, urging citizens not to engage in violence under the guise of religious activity. She reiterated that the Waqf (Amendment) Act would not be enforced in West Bengal and criticized political parties for attempting to incite riots for their gain.

Opposition leaders, including BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, condemned the violence, labeling it a “premeditated act” by extremist elements and accusing the state government of inaction. The situation remains tense, with authorities closely monitoring developments to prevent further escalation.
