Munir Visits China After Conflict With India

Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir recently visited China for high-level talks amid heightened regional tensions following the May military standoff with India. This marked Munir’s first major diplomatic visit since Operation Sindoor, India’s swift and targeted military response to a terror attack in Kashmir.

Focus on Chinese Nationals’ Security

During his discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, General Munir assured full protection for Chinese nationals and strategic assets within Pakistan. This follows repeated attacks on Chinese workers associated with infrastructure projects in Pakistan. The safety of Chinese citizens has become a critical issue for Beijing, especially given the scale of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) activities.

Strong Defence and Diplomatic Alignment

China reiterated its long-standing position of viewing Pakistan as a trusted strategic ally. Wang Yi emphasized the need for deeper cooperation in regional stability, security, and economic development. General Munir highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, describing the China-Pakistan relationship as one built on “iron brotherhood.”

The meeting also included discussions on regional counterterrorism strategies and military coordination. The two sides reaffirmed their shared stance on maintaining peace and development in South Asia, despite recent escalations between Pakistan and India.

Denial of Chinese Involvement in Operation Sindoor

General Munir strongly refuted allegations that China provided real-time intelligence or military support to Pakistan during the conflict with India. He termed such accusations as baseless and reaffirmed that Pakistan’s defence forces operated independently. The Indian side had earlier hinted at possible Chinese or Turkish involvement, which Pakistan has officially denied.

Strategic Recalibration Post-Conflict

This meeting is being seen as part of Pakistan’s broader diplomatic recalibration post-Operation Sindoor. With international scrutiny increasing and ties with key partners evolving, Pakistan appears focused on reinforcing traditional alliances like the one with China. The visit reflects Islamabad’s intent to project resilience, reliability, and regional relevance, especially as India consolidates support from Western nations.
