Mumbai: Shiv Sena’s 30-Year BMC Rule Ends

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election results for 2026 show a major political shift as Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT) lost control of the civic body it led for nearly three decades. The BJP–Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) alliance secured a clear majority, ending the long dominance of Shiv Sena (UBT) in the richest municipal corporation in India.

Key Results

The BJP–Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) combine won the majority of the 227 BMC seats, translating into control of the civic administration. Opposition parties, including Shiv Sena (UBT), Congress and others, won significantly fewer seats. Voter turnout in Mumbai was in line with previous civic polls, reflecting strong public engagement.

Political Implications

The result signals voter preference for the ruling alliance in Maharashtra’s state government and marks a setback for Uddhav Thackeray’s faction. Analysts say the outcome will influence urban governance and public service delivery in Mumbai, with expectations of changes in policy and administrative priorities under the new BMC leadership.

What Happens Next

The newly elected corporators will soon take oath, and the BJP–Shiv Sena (Shinde) alliance is expected to elect a BMC mayor and begin governance functions. The focus will be on infrastructure, sanitation, housing and civic services in the coming term.
