Mumbai Rain Alert: IMD Warns Of Heavy Showers

Mumbai received intense overnight rain on Wednesday, leading to waterlogging in several areas as the southwest monsoon advanced into the city after a delayed onset. The IMD issued a red nowcast alert for Mumbai and Palghar early in the morning, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rain and gusty winds.

Mumbai Red Alert Issued By IMD

The India Meteorological Department issued a red alert for Mumbai and Palghar at 4 am, valid for three hours. The warning included intense to very intense rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching 40-60 kmph.

The alert was later downgraded to orange at 7 am, with moderate to intense rain spells forecast for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar and Sindhudurg.

Heavy Rain Causes Mumbai Waterlogging

Several parts of Mumbai reported waterlogging after heavy overnight rain. Areas such as King’s Circle in Matunga, Hindu Colony in Dadar and Andheri saw flooding, with vehicles and pedestrians moving through waterlogged roads.

The Andheri subway was shut due to flooding, while Dadar station also saw water accumulation. However, civic authorities said suburban railway services, BEST buses and major subways were largely functioning.

Mumbai Monsoon Arrival Delayed

The southwest monsoon reached Mumbai on Tuesday, 13 days after its normal onset date of June 10. The city recorded more than 300 mm of rain in 24 hours between Tuesday morning and Wednesday morning, according to civic data.

The IMD classifies rainfall above 204.4 mm in 24 hours as “extremely heavy”. Officials have advised residents to stay alert, avoid flooded stretches and follow weather updates as rain activity continues across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
