Mumbai Faces Heavy Rainfall, Commuters Stranded as Schools and Colleges Announced Closed

Mumbai experienced severe rainfall this evening, leading to flooded roads, traffic jams, and flight diversions across the city. The Mumbai municipal agency has declared a holiday for schools and colleges tomorrow in response to the downpour.

Several airlines, including SpiceJet, IndiGo, and Vistara, reported flight diversions due to the inclement weather. Vistara announced that Flight UK534 from Hyderabad to Mumbai had to return to Hyderabad and was expected to land at 9:15 PM. Similarly, Flight UK941 from Delhi to Mumbai was diverted to Hyderabad, with an expected arrival of 9:10 PM.

“Due to bad weather (heavy rain) in Mumbai, all departures and arrivals, along with their connected flights, may be affected. Passengers are advised to check their flight status,” SpiceJet posted on X (formerly Twitter).

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for Mumbai and surrounding districts, predicting “extremely heavy rainfall” until Thursday morning. Suburbs like Mulund and neighboring areas experienced the heaviest rain, causing flooding in low-lying areas.

IMD’s 5:30 PM forecast warned of “extremely heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds” in areas including Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri. According to IMD scientist Sushma Nair, a trough running from north Konkan to south Bangladesh, combined with cyclonic circulation over south Chhattisgarh, is responsible for the widespread rain expected over Konkan and Goa this week.
