Mumbai ATS Arrests Man Over Suspected JeM Links

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a 33-year-old man from Mumbai’s Mahim area over suspected links with Pakistan-based terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). The accused, identified as Mohammad Hasan Abu Sarmad Akhtar, is being investigated for allegedly circulating extremist propaganda and maintaining contact with Pakistani intelligence operatives.

Mumbai ATS Arrests Suspect Near Mahim Metro Station

Akhtar was apprehended by the ATS’s Kalachowki unit near Mahim Metro station following intelligence inputs about his online activities.

Originally from Bihar, he reportedly worked as a Rapido bike-taxi rider and sold perfumes in Mumbai.

Investigators seized his mobile phone after identifying allegedly inflammatory social media posts and material associated with Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar.

A case has been registered under Section 196(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with promoting enmity between different groups.

ATS Investigates Jaish-e-Mohammed Propaganda and Pakistan Links

According to investigators, Akhtar allegedly operated a Telegram group where he circulated recordings of speeches delivered by Masood Azhar.

The ATS also identified his alleged association with a Pakistan-linked extremist Telegram channel called Ibn-e-Qasim.

Investigators are examining an Instagram comment allegedly posted by Akhtar concerning a security incident during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Mumbai.

Authorities are additionally investigating suspected communications with Pakistani intelligence operatives. These alleged connections have not yet been established through judicial proceedings.

Maharashtra ATS Examines Digital Evidence

The seized electronic material is undergoing examination to determine whether Akhtar maintained operational links with terrorist organisations or other individuals.

Investigators are also attempting to identify possible associates and establish whether his activities extended beyond online propaganda.

The allegations remain under investigation, and no involvement in a specific terrorist attack has been established.
