Mumbai Activates GRAP-4 as Air Quality Turns Severe

Mumbai has enforced the highest level of pollution-control measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP-4) after air quality in several parts of the city deteriorated to the “severe” category. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said the restrictions were implemented after multiple monitoring stations recorded alarming spikes in PM2.5 and PM10 levels.

Construction and Dust-Generating Work Stopped

More than 50 construction sites have been issued stop-work notices, while dust-producing activities such as material loading, road excavation, and debris movement have been halted in areas including Mazgaon, Deonar, Powai, Malad, Borivali East, Andheri East and Mulund. Small furnace-based units have also been instructed to pause operations or switch to cleaner processes. Enforcement teams with GPS-tracked vehicles are monitoring compliance across the city.

Health Concerns Rise as Smog Covers City

Doctors and civic officials have warned residents of respiratory risks as pollutant levels remain far above safe limits. People with asthma, heart disease, and chronic lung issues have been advised to stay indoors, avoid strenuous outdoor activity, and use masks. Citizens have reported irritation in the eyes, throat discomfort and breathing difficulty due to the dense smog.

Long-Term Measures Continue Under Clean Air Plan

Officials said GRAP-4 is part of Mumbai’s broader clean-air strategy, which includes stricter dust control on construction sites, green-cover expansion and improved air-quality monitoring systems.
