Mulder Declares on 367 to Honour Lara’s Test Record

In a rare display of humility and reverence for cricketing legacy, South African stand-in captain Wiaan Mulder declared the team’s first innings closed at 626 for 5 in the second Test against Zimbabwe, choosing not to surpass Brian Lara’s iconic unbeaten 400-run record. Mulder walked off unbeaten on 367, the fifth-highest individual Test score in history, and opted for the team’s bowling plans over personal glory.

Speaking at the close of the session, Mulder stated, “First things first, I thought we’d got enough and needed to bowl. And, secondly, Brian Lara is a legend…” This decision was not taken lightly. South Africa’s coach Shukri Conrad supported the call, advising Mulder to respect the legends of the game. The captain added, “Lara keeping that record is exactly the way it should be.”

Test record

Mulder’s 367 came off 411 balls, laced with 53 fours and marked by sheer dominance. It shattered South Africa’s previous highest individual score in Tests, previously held by Hashim Amla (311*). More impressively, Mulder reached his triple century in just 297 deliveries, making it the fastest ever by a South African and second only to Virender Sehwag globally.

Yet it wasn’t just the bat where Mulder left his mark. He also claimed two wickets and took a sharp catch as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 170. South Africa enforced the follow-on, and by stumps Zimbabwe were 51/1, still trailing by 405 runs.

Mulder declaration

Mulder’s decision instantly drew comparisons to Mark Taylor’s famous 1998 declaration at 334*, done to preserve Sir Don Bradman’s record. It’s a move that’s increasingly rare in the modern game, where milestones often eclipse match context. Mulder, however, reminded fans what selfless leadership looks like.

Off the field, Mulder’s methods of focus also became a topic of interest. In a lighter moment, he admitted to humming The Cranberries’ “Zombie” between overs to keep himself grounded at the crease during the marathon innings.

Lara respect

The gesture has been widely praised across the cricketing world, not only for the respect shown toward Lara but for putting the team first in a moment where personal accolades were within reach. As the Test moves toward its conclusion, South Africa are poised for a 2–0 series sweep, with Mulder’s sportsmanship emerging as a standout moment.

The cricketing world may remember the scorecard, but more importantly, it will remember the choice—the one where a player chose legacy over records.
