
Monsoon Death Toll in Himachal Climbs to 179
The monsoon season has continued to wreak havoc across Himachal Pradesh, with the death toll rising to 179 since June 20. Of these, 101 deaths have been linked directly to rain-related disasters such as landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts. An additional 78 people lost their lives in road accidents that occurred under extreme weather conditions.
Roads Blocked, Power Outages Continue
The State Disaster Management Authority reported that over 296 roads are still blocked, preventing access to many parts of the state. More than 130 electricity transformers have failed, and over 260 water supply systems are non-functional, disrupting daily life for thousands of residents.
Mandi, Kullu, and Chamba Suffer Worst Damage
The districts of Mandi, Kullu, and Chamba have suffered the most damage. Kullu reported 17 deaths and major infrastructure losses. Several key highways and link roads have been washed away or rendered impassable due to landslides and overflowing rivers.
Fresh Fatalities Reported in Shimla
In a recent incident, a 37-year-old man died when a boulder crushed a vehicle in Gallu Dagri village near Shimla. In a separate case, a JCB operator clearing debris from a landslide fell over 300 meters and died on the spot. Rescue operations were delayed due to difficult terrain and continuous rain.
Massive Crop Loss and Further Rain Warnings
The monsoon has caused damage to more than 88,000 hectares of crops, severely affecting the agricultural sector. Losses to public infrastructure are estimated at over ₹1,700 crore. Weather authorities have warned of further rainfall in the region, prompting emergency services to remain on high alert.
