Mohanlal Apologizes for Riot References in ‘L2: Empuraan’, Announces Cuts

Veteran Malayalam actor Mohanlal has issued a formal apology following public backlash over scenes in his upcoming film L2: Empuraan, which appeared to reference the 2002 Gujarat riots. The controversy prompted concerns over the depiction of communal violence, leading the actor and the film’s production team to make swift changes.

In his statement, Mohanlal said he had no intention of hurting sentiments and acknowledged the responsibility that comes with being a public figure and an artist. He emphasized that his films must never “harbour hatred” toward any political ideology or religious community. He further expressed regret for any distress the film may have caused.

Responding to the growing uproar, the makers of L2: Empuraan have agreed to implement 17 cuts in the film. These edits include the removal or modification of riot-related sequences and scenes depicting graphic violence. The revised version of the film is expected to be released shortly, following necessary approvals.

The controversy highlights the delicate line filmmakers often walk when depicting real or inspired historical events. While creative freedom is essential to cinema, the incident underscores the broader need for sensitivity, especially when stories echo traumatic national events.

Mohanlal’s proactive approach and public apology have been welcomed by many as a responsible move that prioritizes communal harmony and audience sentiment.
