Modi Says Govt Correcting Congress Mistakes in Assam
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said his government is correcting long-standing mistakes he attributed to the Indian National Congress regarding the development of Assam and the Northeast. He made the remarks during a public event in Guwahati after inaugurating a major new terminal at the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport.
Allegations of Neglect and Infiltration
Addressing a large gathering, the Prime Minister claimed that past governments led by the Congress had repeatedly ignored infrastructure and economic growth in Assam and other northeastern states. He also said the previous administration failed to deal effectively with illegal infiltration, posing challenges to the region’s security and identity. Modi asserted that his government’s policies are intended to “correct those mistakes” by strengthening border management and prioritising development projects.
Focus on Development
Modi highlighted several ongoing and completed infrastructure projects in Assam, including highways, rail links, and the expanded airport terminal designed to handle increased passenger traffic. He said such investments are part of a “double-engine” government approach aimed at accelerating growth across sectors.
Political Context
The Prime Minister’s comments come ahead of state and national elections, at a time when political debate over governance, development and security remains intense. Opposition leaders have criticised the government’s performance in the Northeast, saying challenges such as unemployment and industrial growth still need stronger attention.
