Modi Refuses Exemption in Bill to Sack Jailed Ministers – Kiren Rijiju

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said Prime Minister Narendra Modi rejected a proposal during cabinet discussions that would have exempted him from a bill aimed at removing jailed ministers. Rijiju noted that Modi insisted no officeholder should have special protection, saying the Prime Minister is also a citizen subject to the same rules.

Details of the Bill

The legislation includes three bills: the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025; the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025; and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025. Together, they mandate that the Prime Minister, Union ministers, Chief Ministers, and state or UT ministers who are detained for 30 consecutive days on charges carrying a minimum sentence of five years will automatically lose their positions on the 31st day.

Parliamentary Procedure

Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the bills in the Lok Sabha earlier this week. They have since been referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for further scrutiny and recommendations.

Reactions and Criticism

Supporters of the move say it will strengthen accountability and ethical governance. Critics, however, argue the law could be misused for political vendetta, pointing out that it undermines the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
