Modi-Meloni Meet at G7 Marks New Diplomatic ‘Melodi’ Moment

At the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Canada, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni shared a candid and widely celebrated moment that has come to be known as the latest “Melodi moment.” Their warm handshake, exchange of smiles, and casual conversation have added a personal touch to what is becoming a stronger strategic partnership between India and Italy.

Modi responded positively to the interaction by stating, “Fully agree with you… India’s friendship with Italy will continue to get stronger.” The moment follows previous viral appearances of the two leaders, including their joint selfie at COP28, further cementing the public image of a friendly alliance between the two democracies.

India Italy ties

The Modi-Meloni camaraderie goes beyond optics. India and Italy have seen increasing bilateral cooperation, particularly in trade, pharmaceuticals, defence, and technology sectors. Italy has expressed a keen interest in India’s growth story, with companies expanding operations and exploring joint ventures.

Culturally and diplomatically, the two nations share deep-rooted ties, with historical connections dating back centuries. The modern-day alignment is now being shaped by a common vision for a rules-based global order, sustainable development, and counter-terrorism initiatives.

G7 summit

Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Canada marked his sixth consecutive participation in the G7 and his first Canadian visit in ten years. On arrival, he was received by the host, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The summit agenda focused on pressing global issues, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Middle East instability, climate change, and the role of the Global South.

In a significant development, India and Canada agreed to reappoint their high commissioners, ending a prolonged diplomatic chill. Modi and Carney reiterated their shared commitment to democratic principles, rule of law, and territorial integrity.

Modi Meloni

While much attention was drawn to the “Melodi moment,” Modi’s G7 diplomacy carried broader weight. He advocated for collective action on global terrorism, particularly referencing India’s concerns about Pakistan-based terror networks. He also emphasized technology-driven development, energy security, and AI regulation.

As the summit progressed, Modi held bilateral meetings with several leaders, aiming to position India not only as a development partner but also as a thought leader from the Global South. The brief yet symbolic interaction with Meloni underscored how personal diplomacy often complements strategic intent.

The convergence of soft power and strong geopolitical will at the G7 signals India’s expanding global footprint—and the Modi-Meloni partnership appears to be a melodic symbol of this new world order.
