Modi Inaugurates ₹9,000-Crore Projects in Mizoram
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Aizawl on 13 September 2025 to inaugurate and lay the foundation for development projects worth over ₹9,000 crore. The centerpiece of his visit was the formal launch of the Bairabi-Sairang railway line, which connects Aizawl to the national railway network for the first time.
Key Infrastructure Projects
The Bairabi-Sairang rail line, built at a cost of about ₹8,070 crore, passes through challenging terrain with 45 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 88 minor bridges. Alongside the rail project, Modi laid the foundation for major road projects including the Aizawl Bypass Road, Thenzawl-Sialsuk Road, and Khankawn-Rongura Road.
Prime Minister’s Address
Modi described the railway line as a “lifeline of transformation” for Mizoram, highlighting the engineering effort required to complete the project in difficult hilly terrain. He added that the Northeast, including Mizoram, had long been neglected due to “vote bank politics” but is now receiving priority in infrastructure and connectivity initiatives.
Importance for the State
With the new railway connection, Aizawl is now directly linked to the Indian Railways network. The project is expected to significantly improve trade, healthcare, education, and tourism in the state. Enhanced road connectivity is also set to benefit local communities and strengthen links with neighboring states.
