Modi Becomes Longest-Serving Elected Leader

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday became India’s longest-serving elected head of government, reaching 8,931 days in office across his tenures as Gujarat Chief Minister and Prime Minister. The milestone put him ahead of former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, whose record of 8,930 days had stood as the highest for an elected head of government in India.

Modi Sets New Office Tenure Record

The record is based on Modi’s uninterrupted tenure as an elected head of government, beginning with his swearing-in as Gujarat Chief Minister in October 2001 and continuing through his time as Prime Minister. With this, he has become the longest-serving elected head of government in the country when both state and national executive roles are counted together.

Pawan Chamling Record Overtaken

The previous benchmark was held by Pawan Kumar Chamling, who served as Sikkim Chief Minister from December 1994 to May 2019. Modi crossed that total on March 22, 2026. While Chamling remains the longest-serving Chief Minister of a single Indian state, Modi now holds the overall record for cumulative time in elected executive office in India.

Narendra Modi Political Milestone

The development adds another major marker to Modi’s political career. He had already become Gujarat’s longest-serving Chief Minister before moving to national office. Since becoming Prime Minister in 2014, he has led the government through three consecutive Lok Sabha victories in 2014, 2019 and 2024. The latest record further strengthens his place in India’s political history as one of the country’s most enduring elected leaders.
