MK Stalin to Reach Karur After Midnight
At least 36 people lost their lives and around 40 were injured in a stampede at a political rally in Karur, Tamil Nadu, held by actor-turned-politician Vijay. Among the dead were reported eight children and 16 women. The crush happened around 7:45 pm at Velusamypuram on the Karur–Erode highway.
What Led to the Chaos
Eyewitnesses say the crowd surged toward barricades near the stage, triggering panic and causing people to fall and faint. Some children were separated from their families. Many victims were trampled before help could reach them. Overcrowding and delay in crowd control are seen as key factors.
Rescue Efforts and Response
Ambulances had difficulty navigating through congested routes. Volunteers and police formed human chains to reach victims. The injured were taken to hospitals in Karur and referred to medical colleges in Erode and Tiruchirappalli.
Political and Government Reaction
Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh each to the families of the deceased. An inquiry commission is being constituted to investigate the causes and assign responsibility. Vijay expressed deep sorrow, saying his “heart is shattered.”
Stalin’s Visit to Karur
Sources indicate that MK Stalin is likely to arrive in Karur after midnight to meet grieving families, visit the injured, and oversee relief operations. Local government officials will accompany him.
