Mild Tremors Rattle Visakhapatnam Region

Early Tuesday morning, a minor earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale struck near the town of Jogulaputtu in Alluri Sitarama Raju district, Andhra Pradesh, with tremors felt in parts of the nearby city of Visakhapatnam around 4:19 a.m. The epicentre was recorded at a depth of approximately 10 km.

Details of the Seismic Event

Officials from the state disaster management authority stated that no casualties or property damage have been reported so far. Residents in Visakhapatnam’s suburbs reported a brief shaking lasting around five seconds. While the magnitude of 3.7 is low for causing major harm, the event did alarm many who felt the ground move.

Local Response & Monitoring

Disaster management teams have been placed on alert to monitor any possible after-shocks. Authorities emphasise that such tremors, though uncommon in the region compared to major seismic zones, warrant vigilance and can act as reminders of the need for preparedness.

What it Means for the Region

The lightly felt quake underscores that even coastal Andhra Pradesh, which is less known for strong earthquakes compared to other parts of India, is not entirely immune to seismic activity. The lack of damage this time is reassuring, but experts say awareness and structural safety remain important.
