Microsoft Commits to 30-Year Carbon Removal Project in India
Microsoft has entered into a landmark 30-year agreement to advance its carbon removal initiatives through a large-scale afforestation project in India. This initiative, in collaboration with Climate Impact Partners and Terra Natural Capital, aims to enhance environmental sustainability while supporting local communities.
Microsoft’s Commitment to Carbon Removal
As part of its long-term sustainability goals, Microsoft has committed to purchasing 1.5 million tonnes of verified carbon removal credits over the next three decades. This initiative represents Microsoft’s first carbon removal project in India and its largest in the Asia-Pacific region. The commitment aligns with the company’s broader goal of becoming carbon negative by 2030 and removing its historical carbon footprint by 2050.
The Panna Afforestation Project
The afforestation project will take place in Madhya Pradesh, spanning 20,000 hectares and involving the planting of up to 11.6 million native trees across community and farmer lands. The project is designed to generate significant environmental and economic benefits, including:
- Economic Empowerment: Farmers will receive financial benefits from carbon credit sales and additional income from fruit and medicinal trees.
- Sustainable Agriculture: Training programs will be provided to improve climate-smart agricultural techniques, enhancing long-term yields.
- Water Conservation: Infrastructure investments such as ponds and drip irrigation systems will support tree growth and conserve water resources.
- Biodiversity Restoration: By focusing on native species, the project aims to restore natural ecosystems, promoting wildlife diversity.
Collaborative Efforts and Climate Impact
This initiative combines Climate Impact Partners’ expertise in project development, Terra Natural Capital’s financial backing, and Microsoft’s commitment to long-term carbon credit purchasing. The collaboration demonstrates how corporate investment, innovative financing, and sustainable practices can drive meaningful climate action.
Microsoft’s Global Environmental Strategy
The Panna afforestation project is part of Microsoft’s larger strategy to invest in high-quality carbon removal projects worldwide. The company has previously announced major afforestation and reforestation agreements, including a 7 million-tonne deal with other global carbon removal initiatives. Microsoft is also investing in advanced carbon capture technologies, such as ocean-based removal and direct air capture.
Through these initiatives, Microsoft continues to reinforce its commitment to addressing climate change by leveraging nature-based solutions while supporting economic and environmental sustainability in vulnerable communities.
Microsoft’s 30-year afforestation commitment in India underscores its leadership in corporate climate action and its dedication to creating long-term environmental and economic benefits.
