Microsoft Announces 20 Million AI Skilling Drive in India

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has announced a major nationwide initiative to train 20 million Indians in artificial intelligence (AI) by 2030. Speaking during his India visit, Nadella said the country has the potential to become a global leader in the AI era and highlighted the need for large-scale talent development.

Part of Microsoft’s Larger India Strategy

The skilling programme is aligned with Microsoft’s broader expansion plan in India, which includes a $17.5 billion investment over the next four years. This investment will support new data centres, cloud capacity and AI infrastructure, marking Microsoft’s largest commitment in Asia to date.

Collaboration Across Government and Industry

Microsoft will partner with government bodies, educational institutions and industry organisations to roll out the AI skilling drive. The programme will target students, early-career professionals and experienced workers, with the goal of strengthening India’s tech talent pipeline.

Emphasis on Digital Sovereignty and Security

Nadella also addressed concerns around data governance and cybersecurity, noting that India’s push for digital sovereignty is both significant and necessary. Microsoft plans to support this through expanded cloud regions expected to go live by 2026.

Boost to India’s AI Ambitions

Industry observers say the dual push — massive skilling and large-scale investment — could accelerate India’s position in global AI development. The initiative is expected to enhance innovation capacity, attract more technology investment and create future-ready employment opportunities.
