Mexico Warns of Worsening Cuba Crisis
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has warned that proposed US tariffs on countries supplying oil to Cuba could worsen the humanitarian situation on the island. She said such measures risk affecting essential services, including electricity generation, healthcare and food supply.
Oil Supplies and Mexico’s Position
Sheinbaum said decisions on oil exports are a matter of national sovereignty. She confirmed that Mexico has supplied oil to Cuba in recent months but noted that shipments have been paused temporarily due to operational and commercial factors. She stressed that Mexico does not seek confrontation and will review future steps carefully.
Call for Dialogue
The Mexican president said her government will pursue diplomatic engagement with Washington to understand how the proposed tariffs would be implemented. She added that Mexico wants to support the Cuban people while ensuring its own economic and legal interests are protected.
Regional Concerns Grow
The US move is part of a broader effort to increase economic pressure on Cuba. Several countries in Latin America have expressed concern that restrictions on energy supplies could deepen shortages and instability in the region.
