Meta Splits AI Division in Major Restructure Amid Tensions

Meta Platforms is reorganizing its artificial intelligence operations, splitting its Meta Superintelligence Labs into four distinct units: infrastructure, long-term AI research (FAIR), product-focused innovation (including Meta AI assistant), and a new frontier lab (TBD Lab). The move aims to streamline efforts toward achieving “superintelligence”—AI that surpasses human capabilities.

Reshuffle Follows Intense Investment and Internal Strain

This marks the fourth major revamp of Meta’s AI division within six months. It follows a massive hiring spree, lavish compensation packages for top AI talent, and heavy infrastructure investment. Internal tensions have surfaced, as long-standing researchers clashed with the new cohort brought in under aggressive recruitment terms.

Potential Job Cuts and Strategic Shift

While the restructuring aims to clarify priorities and improve coordination, it also raises the possibility of downsizing. Some executive departures and reassignment of roles are already underway. Meta is also considering integrating third-party or open-source AI models, signaling flexibility beyond its proprietary approach.
