Lionel Messi has thanked Argentina supporters following their 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, admitting that the disappointment would take time to overcome while praising his team’s journey.

Messi said the pain of losing the final was immense and that the emotional wound would not heal quickly. However, the Argentina captain said he would also remember the team’s comebacks, commitment and determination throughout the tournament.

The 39-year-old thanked supporters for their messages and for uniting behind the national team. He said Argentina could take pride in once again finishing among the world’s leading football nations.

Messi also congratulated Spain after Luis de la Fuente’s side secured its second World Cup title.

Spain Beat Argentina in Final

Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute at New York New Jersey Stadium in East Rutherford. The result prevented Argentina from becoming the first men’s team since Brazil in 1962 to retain the World Cup.

Argentina had entered the tournament as defending champions after defeating France in the 2022 final. Despite falling short against Spain, Lionel Scaloni’s team became the first Argentine side to reach consecutive World Cup finals.

Lionel Messi World Cup Record

The match was Messi’s third World Cup final following appearances against Germany in 2014 and France in 2022. He joined Brazil’s Cafu as the only male players to appear in three finals.

Messi scored eight goals during the 2026 tournament and remained central to Argentina’s run. He has now competed at six World Cups.

The Inter Miami forward has not announced whether he will continue playing internationally. He remains Argentina’s most decorated footballer, having won the World Cup, two Copa América titles and the Finalissima.
