Meloni Warns Against Western Trade War

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has issued a strong warning against the possibility of a trade war between Western allies. Her statement comes at a time of rising economic tension following recent tariff announcements from the United States.

Speaking on the matter, Meloni said, “A trade war within the West would weaken us all in the face of the global challenges we are confronting together.” She added, “Europe has the economic and financial strength to assert its position and reach a fair and sensible agreement. Italy will do its part. As always.”

Background On Tariff Dispute

The tensions began after the United States announced plans to impose 30% tariffs on selected European and Mexican imports starting August 1. In response, the European Union had prepared retaliatory tariffs worth €21 billion on American goods. However, the EU has temporarily suspended its countermeasures until the start of August, in a bid to give diplomacy a chance.

The EU has stated that it is ready to implement a second, broader round of retaliatory tariffs—potentially targeting an additional €72 billion in US goods—if talks do not lead to a resolution.

EU’s Call For Unity

Meloni’s remarks were echoed by other European leaders, who emphasized the need to maintain unity among allies, particularly in light of shared challenges such as the war in Ukraine, energy security, and global economic stability.

Trade ministers across the EU continue to hold discussions with their US counterparts, aiming to prevent damage to key industries including steel, agriculture, wine, and automotive manufacturing.

With just over two weeks left for negotiations, the focus remains on de-escalation and securing a mutually acceptable deal that avoids further economic strain between long-standing partners.
