MCG Pitch Rated Unsatisfactory After Boxing Day Test

The pitch used for the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground has been rated “unsatisfactory” by the International Cricket Council following the unusually short duration of the match. The Test, played between Australia and England, ended inside two days, prompting concerns over the balance between bat and ball.

ICC Assessment and Rating

The ICC match referee concluded that the surface excessively favoured bowlers and did not offer a fair contest expected of a five-day Test match. A total of 36 wickets fell across the two days, with batting conditions remaining difficult throughout the game. Under the ICC’s Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process, an unsatisfactory rating results in one demerit point being added to the venue’s record, which will remain valid for five years.

Impact on the Match

The low-scoring nature of the contest drew criticism from former players and analysts, who said the pitch failed to live up to the standards traditionally associated with the Boxing Day Test. England secured victory while chasing a modest target, winning the match quickly despite Australia having already retained the Ashes earlier in the series.

What It Means for the MCG

The single demerit point does not immediately affect the MCG’s right to host international matches. However, venues accumulating six demerit points within a five-year window can face a temporary suspension from hosting international cricket. Cricket authorities have acknowledged the rating and indicated that steps will be taken to ensure improved playing surfaces for future marquee fixtures.
