Mauritius Honors PM Modi with Highest Civilian Award

During his two-day visit to Mauritius, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honored with the country’s highest civilian award, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean (GCSK). This prestigious accolade, announced by Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to strengthening ties with Mauritius.

With this honor, PM Modi becomes the first Indian recipient of the GCSK, marking the 21st international award conferred upon him by a foreign nation.  Expressing his gratitude, PM Modi stated, “I humbly accept this decision with great respect. It is an honor for the historic bond between India and Mauritius.”

The announcement was made during an event attended by over 3,500 individuals, including members of the Mauritius cabinet. The national anthems of both India and Mauritius were played, symbolizing the deep-rooted cultural and historical connections between the two nations.

In a gesture reflecting India’s commitment to its diaspora, PM Modi presented Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to Prime Minister Ramgoolam and his spouse, Veena Ramgoolam. This move underscores the enduring people-to-people ties that form the foundation of India-Mauritius relations.

Additionally, PM Modi gifted Mauritius President Dharambeer Gokhool and the First Lady with sacred Sangam water from the Maha Kumbh, a Banarasi saree, and Makhana, further highlighting the cultural affinity shared between the two countries.

During his visit, PM Modi also explored the Ayurveda Garden at the State House in Mauritius, developed in collaboration with the Government of India. This initiative symbolizes India’s dedication to promoting traditional medicine and holistic health practices globally.

The conferment of the GCSK upon PM Modi not only acknowledges his personal contributions but also reflects the robust and enduring partnership between India and Mauritius, built on shared values, mutual respect, and a common vision for the future.
