Upon receiving the award, PM Modi dedicated it to the ancestors who migrated from India to Mauritius centuries ago. He emphasized their enduring contributions to the development of Mauritius, stating that their hard work has helped shape the island nation into a vibrant and prosperous society.
Deep Cultural and Historical Connections
Mauritius has a significant Indian-origin population, with nearly 70% of its people tracing their ancestry to Indian indentured laborers brought to the island during the colonial era. This deep-rooted connection is reflected in the widespread presence of Indian languages, traditions, and cultural influences in Mauritius. The strong historical ties between the two countries have continued to flourish through diplomatic cooperation and mutual development initiatives.
Recognition of Modi’s Global Leadership
This award adds to the numerous international honors received by PM Modi from various nations, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, and Russia. His recognition by Mauritius further solidifies his status as a global leader fostering international relations and regional cooperation.
Participation in National Day Celebrations
As part of his visit, PM Modi participated in Mauritius’ National Day celebrations, marking the second time he has been the chief guest at the event. An Indian Navy contingent also took part in the parade, symbolizing the strong maritime and defense cooperation between the two countries.
Following the award ceremony, PM Modi visited Ganga Talao, a sacred lake in Mauritius, where he offered prayers and performed a symbolic immersion of holy water from the Triveni Sangam. This act reinforced the spiritual and cultural bond between India and Mauritius.
The conferment of Mauritius’ highest civilian honor on PM Modi not only celebrates his leadership but also reaffirms the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations. With ongoing collaborations in various fields, India and Mauritius continue to strengthen their partnership for a shared future.
