A major road accident in Andhra Pradesh’s Markapuram area left at least 13 people dead and 22 others injured after a private travel bus collided with a tipper lorry and caught fire early on March 26. Reports said the collision caused the bus to burst into flames after hitting the lorry’s diesel tank, making rescue efforts more difficult. Authorities later confirmed 13 deaths, although early casualty estimates briefly varied.
Bus Fire Leaves 22 Injured After Lorry Collision
Officials said 22 injured passengers were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment, with at least three reported to be in critical condition. Police and rescue teams reached the scene soon after the crash, while local authorities set up a control room at the Markapuram deputy collector’s office to help families seeking information about victims.
Andhra Pradesh Orders Probe Into Fatal Bus Crash
Preliminary findings suggest the bus may have veered into the opposite lane before the collision, though investigators are also examining the driver’s claim that the steering system had malfunctioned. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the accident, ordered a detailed inquiry, and directed officials to ensure the best medical care for the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also announced ex gratia support for the families of those killed and injured.
