Marco Rubio Defends US-Pakistan Ties, Cites India-Iran
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has defended Washington’s growing diplomatic engagement with Pakistan, comparing it with India’s relationship with Iran. Speaking during an interview in Mumbai on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, Rubio said the United States must maintain relations with strategically important countries despite disagreements, while reiterating Washington’s opposition to terrorism and its sponsors.
Marco Rubio Defends US-Pakistan Relations
Rubio was questioned about his earlier position as a US senator, when he proposed restricting American security assistance to Pakistan over concerns about terrorism directed against India.
He explained that his responsibilities as Secretary of State required him to manage broader American foreign policy interests.
Rubio emphasised Pakistan’s nuclear capabilities and geographical importance, arguing that maintaining diplomatic communication was necessary even when disagreements existed.
Rubio Compares US-Pakistan Ties With India-Iran Relations
Drawing a comparison with India’s diplomatic engagement with Iran, Rubio said countries often maintain relationships with governments whose policies they do not necessarily support.
He suggested that Washington’s communication channels with Islamabad could potentially help address India’s security concerns.
According to Rubio, sustained American engagement might allow Washington to discourage Pakistani actions that cause concern in New Delhi.
His remarks come amid renewed US-Pakistan diplomatic engagement under President Donald Trump’s administration.
India-US Relations Remain Strategic Priority
Rubio’s comments followed discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during his three-day visit to India.
The two governments reviewed regional security, developments in West Asia and opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation.
Relations between India and Pakistan remain strained following their military confrontation in May 2025. Trump has repeatedly claimed credit for helping end the hostilities, while India maintains that the cessation of fighting followed direct communication between the two countries.
Rubio’s remarks indicate that Washington intends to maintain diplomatic relations with both India and Pakistan while continuing its strategic partnership with New Delhi.
