Marco Rubio Blames India for Fueling Russia, Blocking Trade

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has publicly criticized India’s trade and energy policies, accusing New Delhi of indirectly helping Russia and obstructing progress in U.S.–India trade negotiations. His comments mark a sharp escalation in diplomatic tone amid growing economic friction between the two countries.

Russian Oil Purchases Under Scrutiny

Rubio said India’s continued large-scale purchase of discounted Russian oil is “a major point of irritation” for the United States. He argued that while India claims energy security needs, the reality is that these purchases help fund Russia’s military actions in Ukraine. According to Rubio, the U.S. has made multiple requests for India to reduce or diversify its oil sources, but those appeals have been ignored.

Rubio: India Blocking U.S. Farmers and Trade

Beyond oil, Rubio strongly criticized India for refusing to allow U.S. agricultural and dairy goods into its markets. He said American farmers and businesses are being denied fair access, even though India benefits from open access to U.S. technology and capital. He warned that India’s trade barriers are inconsistent with the expectations from a close economic partner.

25% Tariff a Direct Result, Says Rubio

Rubio defended the recent 25% tariff imposed on Indian imports as a necessary response to what he described as India’s stubborn trade practices and geopolitical alignment. He said the tariff is aimed at restoring fairness and putting pressure on India to adopt a more cooperative stance.

India Responds Cautiously

India has pushed back on Rubio’s comments, saying it has a sovereign right to choose its trade partners and protect sensitive domestic sectors like agriculture and dairy. Officials in New Delhi insist that India remains open to a fair and respectful trade deal, but won’t compromise its core interests under pressure.

Relations at a Crossroads

Rubio’s remarks reflect rising frustration within the U.S. administration over India’s independent foreign policy, particularly its ties with Russia. Analysts say the relationship could strain further unless both sides find middle ground on key trade and strategic concerns.
