US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called India “one of the top relationships the United States has in the world today.” He made the remark during the Senate confirmation hearing for Sergio Gor, Trump’s nominee for US Ambassador to India, underscoring the strategic importance of ties with New Delhi.

At the same hearing, Sergio Gor said that India and the US are “not that far apart” in resolving outstanding tariff issues. He expressed optimism that negotiations will resolve trade obstacles in the coming weeks.
Russian Oil Purchases Highlighted
Gor also emphasized that reducing India’s purchases of Russian oil is a priority for the administration. He signaled that this issue is tied closely with trade discussions and broader geopolitical concerns.

Marco Rubio stressed that India holds a central role in the Indo-Pacific region. Both he and Gor view the US-India partnership as entering a phase of “extraordinary transition,” with closer cooperation expected in trade, security, and regional diplomacy.
