Manipur Issues Advisory to Deport Illegal Migrants

The Manipur government has issued a strict advisory to prevent and deport illegal migrants amid rising concerns over unrest in neighboring countries. The advisory was released on July 23, 2025, urging district officials and police to immediately identify and manage unauthorized border entrants.

High Alert at Borders

Home Commissioner N. Ashok Kumar directed Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs) to step up surveillance at all state borders—international, inter-state, and inter-district. Any person caught attempting to enter without permission must be reported immediately, and their biometric and personal details recorded without delay.

Temporary Shelter, Then Deportation

The advisory calls for migrants to be placed in secure, designated shelters where they will receive humanitarian assistance. It clearly states that after legal procedures are followed, these individuals must be deported and not allowed to integrate or settle in Manipur.

District-Level Task Forces

Each district is instructed to form a task force to oversee the process. These teams, led by district police officers, will regularly inspect suspected entry points, monitor border pass systems, and trace individuals who overstay or enter illegally. Members may include police, paramilitary forces, and biometric data staff.

Broader Regional Context

This advisory follows similar ones in neighboring states like Nagaland and Meghalaya, triggered by eviction drives in Assam. It also comes amid ongoing ethnic tensions in Manipur and unrest in Myanmar, raising security concerns for both residents and officials.

What This Means

The new measures underline the state government’s firm stance on preventing illegal migration. Officials emphasize that while humanitarian support will be provided, unauthorized stayers cannot gain permanent residency. Families in border areas are encouraged to cooperate to maintain community safety.
