Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh Resigns Amid Prolonged Ethnic Violence
Manipur’s Chief Minister, N. Biren Singh, has tendered his resignation amidst ongoing ethnic violence that has plagued the northeastern state for nearly two years. On Sunday, Singh submitted his resignation letter to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal.
Resignation Amidst Prolonged Ethnic Unrest
The resignation comes in the wake of persistent ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which have resulted in over 250 fatalities and displaced approximately 60,000 individuals since May 2023. The conflict has been primarily driven by disputes over economic benefits and job quotas, with both communities accusing each other of bias and discrimination.
Political Pressure and No-Confidence Motion
Singh’s decision to step down was influenced by mounting political pressure, including an impending no-confidence motion proposed by the opposition Congress party. The motion was scheduled for discussion in the legislative assembly session set to begin on February 10. In his resignation letter, Singh expressed gratitude to the central government for its interventions and developmental initiatives aimed at safeguarding the interests of all Manipuri citizens.
Historical Context of Resignation Attempts
This is not the first time Singh has attempted to resign amid the state’s turmoil. In 2023, he faced significant public protests when he initially sought to step down due to the escalating violence. Supporters blocked his convoy and even tore up his resignation letter, compelling him to remain in office at that time.
Continued Efforts to Restore Peace
Prior to his resignation, Singh emphasized that his government had been making all possible efforts to restore peace and ensure that people live together peacefully as before. Despite these efforts, the state has continued to experience sporadic violence, including recent incidents where unidentified gunmen looted arms from an India Reserve Battalion outpost in Thoubal district.
Future Leadership and State Stability
Following Singh’s resignation, the Governor has requested him to continue in a caretaker capacity until a new leadership is established. The central government, along with state officials, is expected to expedite the process of appointing a new chief minister to address the ongoing challenges and work towards restoring stability in Manipur.
