Mamata Questions Dhankhar’s Resignation Reason
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has questioned the reason behind Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation, expressing skepticism over the official explanation citing health concerns. Addressing the media, Mamata remarked, “He is a healthy man,” implying that there could be political motivations behind the move.
Resignation Comes Amid Parliamentary Session
Dhankhar submitted his resignation just as the Monsoon Session of Parliament began, surprising many in political circles. Despite recent reports of a minor health episode, he had been seen participating in events and carrying out his official responsibilities. This prompted Mamata to say, “Something else must be there,” hinting at possible behind-the-scenes pressure.
Opposition Joins in Raising Questions
Several opposition leaders, including senior Congress figure Ashok Gehlot, have echoed Mamata’s concerns. Gehlot noted that Dhankhar had not displayed any serious health issues in recent weeks and suggested that the decision could have been politically orchestrated. “He was active and visible. This is not just about health,” he said.
Past Tensions Add to the Political Intrigue
Jagdeep Dhankhar, who served as Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022, often had run-ins with the Mamata-led state government. Their strained relationship during that period now adds further context to Mamata’s present remarks. She had frequently accused him of overreach during his governorship.
What Happens Next?
Following the resignation, Deputy Chairman Harivansh is currently presiding over the Rajya Sabha proceedings. As per procedure, the Election Commission will soon announce a schedule for electing the next Vice President, which must be completed within 60 days.
