Mamata Banerjee to Appear in Supreme Court

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to appear before the Supreme Court on Wednesday in connection with her petition challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being carried out in the State.

Seeks to Argue Case in Person

Banerjee has moved an application seeking permission to argue the matter herself as a party-in-person. She has said she is fully aware of the facts and legal issues involved and wishes to place her submissions directly before the court.

Challenge to Electoral Roll Revision

The petition questions the Election Commission’s decision to conduct a Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in West Bengal. Banerjee has argued that the exercise could lead to the exclusion of genuine voters and cause administrative inconvenience ahead of elections. She has sought directions to ensure that no eligible voter is disenfranchised due to procedural lapses.

The matter is listed before a Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court, and the court is expected to first consider her request to argue in person before taking up the substantive issues raised in the petition.
