Mamata Banerjee Seeks Amit Shah’s Resignation
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, holding him responsible for recent terror incidents in different parts of the country. Speaking at a public event in West Bengal, Banerjee questioned the Centre’s handling of internal security and asked why terror attacks had taken place despite repeated claims of strong national security measures.
Focus on Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir Attacks
Banerjee referred to recent terror-related incidents in Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir, asking why such attacks occurred if security mechanisms were functioning effectively. She said the Union Home Ministry must take responsibility for lapses in intelligence and prevention, instead of placing blame on state governments. According to her, internal security is primarily the responsibility of the Centre, especially in matters related to terrorism.
Response to Infiltration Allegations
The Chief Minister also reacted to allegations made by Amit Shah regarding illegal infiltration through West Bengal’s borders. Banerjee rejected the claims and said the state government had cooperated with the Centre on border management and fencing wherever land-related issues were resolved. She accused the BJP of using infiltration claims for political purposes.
Political Context Ahead of Elections
The remarks come amid growing political tensions between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP ahead of upcoming elections. Banerjee said the BJP was diverting attention from governance failures by making exaggerated claims and attacking opposition-ruled states. She maintained that her government would continue to prioritise development and security within the constitutional framework.
Centre Yet to Respond
As of now, there has been no official response from the Union Home Ministry to Banerjee’s demand for Amit Shah’s resignation.
