Maldives President Assures India: Will Not Compromise Security

Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, currently on a four-day state visit to India, assured New Delhi that the Maldives will never take any action that could undermine India’s security interests. The statement comes as both countries seek to reset their diplomatic relations amid the Maldives’ economic challenges and its growing ties with China.

Maldives Seeks to Strengthen India Ties

President Muizzu’s visit, which began on Sunday, is seen as a significant move to reaffirm the Maldives’ commitment to maintaining strong bilateral ties with India. Relations between the two nations had been strained earlier this year after a Maldivian minister made controversial remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sparking a diplomatic row. The situation worsened when the Maldives asked for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel stationed on the island nation.

Addressing concerns about his perceived closeness to China, Muizzu emphasized that the Maldives’ engagements with China would not pose a threat to India’s security. He clarified that the country’s relations with other nations are guided by national priorities but will always consider regional stability and India’s strategic concerns.

“Maldives would never do anything that undermines the security of India,” Muizzu said in an interview. “India is a valued partner and friend of the Maldives, and our relationship is built on mutual respect and shared interests.”

Addressing Military Withdrawal and Domestic Priorities

Muizzu justified the decision to ask for the withdrawal of Indian troops, stating it was in response to the demands of the Maldivian people. He assured that the move was not aimed at weakening ties but rather at addressing domestic priorities. “What I did is what the people of Maldives asked of me,” he added, indicating that the decision was taken after careful consideration of national interests.

He also mentioned that the Maldives is reviewing past agreements with India to ensure they contribute positively to regional stability and align with the country’s national interests.

Financial Crisis and Future Cooperation

Muizzu’s visit comes at a crucial time when the Maldives is grappling with a severe economic crisis. The nation’s foreign exchange reserves have fallen to $440 million, raising fears of a possible debt default. The economic downturn has led the Maldives to seek stronger financial and developmental support from its allies, including India.

During his visit, Muizzu is expected to engage in high-level discussions aimed at enhancing bilateral cooperation and securing economic assistance. The focus will be on exploring new avenues of collaboration to overcome the financial challenges and foster long-term growth and stability in the Maldives.
