MakeMyTrip Reports 250% Spike in Turkey, Azerbaijan Trip Cancellations
Indian travel sentiment has taken a decisive turn as MakeMyTrip reported a staggering 250% surge in trip cancellations to Turkey and Azerbaijan. This shift follows widespread patriotic boycott calls after both countries publicly backed Pakistan in the aftermath of Operation Sindoor.
The online travel company also observed a 60% drop in fresh bookings to both nations. In response, MakeMyTrip has halted all promotional offers related to Turkey and Azerbaijan. The platform issued a public advisory stating its support for national sentiment and discouraging non-essential travel to these countries as a mark of solidarity with India’s armed forces.
Turkey Azerbaijan Boycott Impact
The cancellation wave gathered momentum after several public figures and entrepreneurs appealed to citizens to reconsider spending on countries perceived as hostile to India’s interests. A key figure noted that Indian tourists spent over ₹4,000 crore in Turkey and Azerbaijan in the past year alone, raising questions about indirectly supporting nations that have taken adversarial diplomatic positions.
Following this, other travel platforms also saw noticeable shifts. EaseMyTrip reported over a 20% rise in cancellations to these destinations, while ixigo announced a complete suspension of bookings to both countries, citing national responsibility and alignment with patriotic sentiment.
Shift in Travel Preferences
Travel agents from states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Odisha have confirmed the growing reluctance of Indian tourists to visit these countries. Many travelers are now choosing alternate destinations that are seen as neutral or friendlier to India. Countries like Georgia, Greece, Serbia, Thailand, and Vietnam have emerged as new favorites for international holidays.
The developments highlight the increasing role of national sentiment in shaping consumer behavior. While tourism is often viewed as apolitical, recent events underline how foreign policy and global alignments can directly impact travel trends and economic exchanges.
As the situation continues to unfold, travel companies are adapting their offerings and policies to remain in sync with public sentiment and geopolitical realities.
