Mahayuti Gets 68 Unopposed Wins in Civic Polls
The ruling Mahayuti alliance has gained an early advantage in the Maharashtra civic elections, with 68 of its candidates being elected unopposed across several municipal corporations and councils in the state. These candidates were declared elected after either no rival nominations were filed or opposing candidates withdrew their papers before the final deadline.
BJP Dominates Uncontested Victories
Of the 68 uncontested seats, 44 were won by the Bharatiya Janata Party, making it the largest beneficiary within the Mahayuti alliance. The remaining unopposed candidates belong to the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and the Nationalist Congress Party faction led by Ajit Pawar. The unopposed victories have been recorded in multiple urban local bodies, including major civic corporations such as Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, Kalyan-Dombivli, Panvel, Bhiwandi, Jalgaon, and Dhule.
Opposition Flags Democratic Concerns
Opposition parties have raised concerns over the large number of uncontested seats, alleging that withdrawals and lack of competition may have restricted voter choice in several wards. They have questioned whether local elections are witnessing a decline in genuine electoral contest.
Voting to Proceed for Remaining Seats
Polling for the remaining contested wards will take place as scheduled. With these unopposed wins already secured, the Mahayuti alliance enters the next phase of the civic elections with a numerical and psychological edge.
