
Maharashtra to Establish Advanced Labs in 20 ITIs to Boost Skills and Support Differently-Abled Students
The Maharashtra government has announced a major initiative to modernize technical education infrastructure by establishing advanced laboratories in 20 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) across the state. The project aims to strengthen vocational education, promote entrepreneurship, and support inclusive learning, particularly for differently-abled students.
To execute this vision, the Department of Skill Development, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation has signed multiple agreements with national organizations specializing in education and social development. The initiative was formally launched at an event attended by senior state leadership and key partners.
Upgrading Technical Training Facilities
As part of the tripartite partnership, the state will upgrade electrical workshops in 20 government ITIs over the next three years. This includes setting up modern labs for solar technician training and industrial automation. Select trainees from the electrician stream will receive an opportunity to undergo a complimentary 15-day advanced training module at a specialized facility in Bengaluru.
The program targets around 9,750 youth over a four-year span, covering divisions such as Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Nashik, and Amravati. This move is aimed at equipping students with market-relevant skills aligned with industry requirements.
Empowering Differently-Abled Students
A key highlight of the initiative is its focus on inclusivity. A specialized plan has been introduced to enhance skill training opportunities for differently-abled students enrolled in ITIs. This includes developing Indian Sign Language-based training modules, customized curriculum, and hands-on job training.
To implement these plans effectively, a Joint Working Committee will be established. It will focus on designing customized skill development programs, training educators, and facilitating industry collaborations that create real employment opportunities for students with disabilities.
Promoting Entrepreneurship
Complementing the skill development efforts is a dedicated entrepreneurship drive. The state has partnered with development agencies to support 5,000 micro and small entrepreneurs through structured mentorship, training workshops, and business guidance. This initiative is expected to increase self-reliance and foster grassroots economic growth across districts.
