Maharashtra Assembly Backs Bharat Ratna for Phule Couple
The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution urging the central government to confer the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, on renowned social reformers Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule. The resolution garnered support from all parties in the House and was moved with the intent of recognizing the couple’s lasting contributions to Indian society.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar emphasized the importance of this recognition, stating that honoring the Phule couple with the Bharat Ratna would align with the collective sentiment of the people and serve as a tribute to their historic role in shaping modern India.
Legacy of Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule
Jyotirao Phule and his wife Savitribai Phule were key figures in 19th-century India’s social reform movement. They were among the earliest advocates of women’s education and fought relentlessly against caste discrimination and gender inequality. Their pioneering work laid the foundation for social justice, particularly through the establishment of schools for girls and marginalized communities.
Savitribai Phule is widely regarded as India’s first female teacher, while Jyotirao Phule is celebrated for initiating progressive reforms, including the fight against untouchability and the caste system. Together, they created a powerful legacy of empowerment and education that continues to inspire generations.
A Call for National Recognition
The resolution passed in the Assembly reflects Maharashtra’s commitment to preserving and honoring the memory of its most impactful reformers. Lawmakers urged the central government to act on the recommendation promptly, stating that awarding the Bharat Ratna to Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule would be a fitting tribute to their enduring contributions to the nation.
The demand also echoes long-standing appeals from various social organizations and academic institutions that have advocated for national acknowledgment of the Phule couple’s transformative role in Indian history. The move is seen as both symbolic and historic, affirming their place among India’s greatest visionaries.
