Maharashtra Allocates Over ₹25 Crore to Support 560 Cowsheds Under Desi Govansh Pariposhan Yojana

In a significant move to bolster indigenous cattle conservation, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has sanctioned a grant of ₹25.44 crore under the Desi Govansh Pariposhan Yojana. This funding has been directly transferred to the accounts of 560 registered cowsheds across the state, aiming to enhance the upkeep and welfare of native cow breeds.

The Desi Govansh Pariposhan Yojana is a state initiative dedicated to the conservation, protection, and welfare of indigenous cattle. Recognizing the challenges faced by livestock farmers in maintaining native breeds, the scheme provides financial assistance to make cattle rearing more viable. Under this program, a subsidy of ₹50 per cow per day is allocated, covering essential expenses such as fodder, healthcare, and shelter maintenance.

Chief Minister Fadnavis, during the announcement, emphasized the pivotal role of indigenous breeds in rural development. He lauded the efforts of the Maharashtra Cow Service Commission in promoting and safeguarding these native cattle, highlighting their significance in the state’s agrarian economy.

Animal Husbandry Minister Pankaja Munde also commended the commission’s dedication, noting that the initiative addresses the financial challenges associated with raising low-productivity cows. She underscored the importance of such schemes in preserving the rich biodiversity of Maharashtra’s livestock and supporting the livelihoods of farmers engaged in traditional cattle rearing.

Shekhar Mundada, Chairman of the Maharashtra Cow Service Commission, reported that the funding has provided crucial relief to numerous cowsheds. He detailed that the subsidy is available to cowsheds registered under the commission, with eligibility criteria including housing at least 50 cows, significant experience in cattle management, and possession of a nationalized bank account. Additionally, the livestock must be ear-tagged to ensure proper monitoring and accountability.

This financial boost is anticipated to improve the operational capabilities of these cowsheds, ensuring better care for the cattle and encouraging more farmers to engage in indigenous cattle rearing. By alleviating some of the financial burdens, the state aims to promote sustainable agricultural practices and preserve native cattle breeds, which are integral to Maharashtra’s cultural and agricultural heritage.

The direct transfer of funds ensures transparency and prompt utilization, reflecting the government’s commitment to supporting grassroots-level agricultural initiatives. This move is expected to inspire similar programs in other regions, fostering a nationwide effort toward indigenous cattle conservation and rural development.
