Magnitude 7.8 Quake Hits Kamchatka, Tsunami Alert Lifted

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky region of Russia early Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The quake’s epicenter was located about 128 kilometres east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres.

Aftershocks and Tsunami Warning

At least five aftershocks were recorded, the strongest measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale. A tsunami warning was briefly issued for coastal areas but was later lifted after the threat diminished.

No Immediate Damage Reported

Authorities confirmed there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Emergency services in the Kamchatka region have been placed on high alert as a precaution.
