
Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Hits Western Turkey, One Inmates Dead
On the evening of August 10, 2025, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck the Sındırgı district in Balıkesir province, Turkey. The quake occurred at a shallow depth, worsening its impact. Its tremors were felt even in Istanbul, around 200 kilometers away, causing widespread shock and concern.
Casualties and Structural Damage
Tragically, an elderly woman lost her life, and 29 people were injured, although most of them sustained minor wounds. Around 16 buildings collapsed, and at least two mosque minarets tumbled down. Rescue and safety operations were conducted promptly, and no more casualties were reported.
Aftershocks and Public Advice
The quake was followed by multiple aftershocks, one measuring around 4.6 in magnitude. Authorities advised people to stay out of damaged structures and remain cautious about potential tremors.
