Macron Says UN Sanctions on Iran to Be Reimposed Soon

French President Emmanuel Macron said that United Nations sanctions on Iran are likely to be reimposed by the end of September 2025. He made the remarks after recent talks between Iran and European powers failed to bring what he called “serious” responses from Tehran.

Conditions for Delay

The E3 group—Britain, France, and Germany—had offered Iran a window to avoid the sanctions “snapback” by meeting certain conditions. These include restoring access for UN nuclear inspectors, accounting for Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile, and engaging in substantive negotiations with the US and Europe. Iran’s responses, according to Macron, did not meet these expectations.

What Is Snapback Mechanism

The snapback mechanism is part of the 2015 nuclear agreement (JCPOA) under UN Security Council Resolution 2231. It allows previously lifted sanctions to be reinstated automatically if Iran fails in major compliance obligations, such as allowing inspections or limiting nuclear enrichment. The mechanism was triggered by the E3 in late August 2025.

Iran’s Reaction

Iran has criticised the European powers, calling the move politically motivated and unjustified. Iranian officials argue that Europe is misusing the snapback mechanism. Tehran has also proposed a plan to diffuse the situation, including allowing some inspections, but says it will not accept what it sees as one-sided demands.
