Machado Says Venezuela Blocked Return

The Wall Street Journal reported that exiled Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has accused the country’s interim government of blocking her return as Venezuela struggles with the aftermath of devastating twin earthquakes.

Maria Corina Machado Blocked From Venezuela Return

Machado said she was stopped from flying back to Venezuela from Panama after authorities allegedly restricted air access to prevent her entry. She said her return was necessary as the country faces a major humanitarian crisis following powerful earthquakes last week.

The opposition leader, who has been living outside Venezuela since December, said she would still find a way to return and support relief efforts. She accused the government of obstructing both her travel and humanitarian assistance.

Venezuela Earthquake Crisis Deepens

Venezuela is dealing with widespread destruction after two major earthquakes struck the country. Reports indicate that more than 1,700 people have died, thousands have been injured and large numbers remain missing.

Health services, rescue teams and relief workers are under severe pressure as damaged infrastructure slows emergency response. International aid teams have also been involved in rescue and recovery operations.

US Venezuela Political Tensions

Machado’s attempted return has added fresh political tension to Venezuela’s already fragile situation. The United States has backed interim leader Delcy Rodríguez as part of a broader effort to stabilise the country after Nicolás Maduro’s removal from power earlier this year.

US officials have reportedly prioritised earthquake relief, oil access, migration and security cooperation over immediate political transition. Machado, meanwhile, has continued to call for democratic reforms and free elections.

The standoff over her return could test the delicate relationship between Washington and Caracas at a time when Venezuela is facing one of its worst humanitarian emergencies in years.
