L and T Eyes Billion-Dollar Defence Growth

Larsen & Toubro (L&T), one of India’s foremost engineering conglomerates, is setting its sights on building a multi-billion-dollar defence enterprise, leveraging its current ₹6,185 crore ($726 million) defence order book. The company’s aggressive push comes as the Narendra Modi-led government intensifies efforts to modernize India’s military through the Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative.

At the heart of this transformation is the AI-powered light tank “Zorawar,” developed in collaboration with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). Slated for rollout from L&T’s Hazira facility in Gujarat, this project exemplifies the fusion of indigenous design, cutting-edge technology, and battlefield adaptability needed in modern warfare.

Defence Expansion in Line with Modi Government’s Agenda

L&T’s defence roadmap is deeply aligned with Prime Minister Modi’s strategic vision to overhaul the Indian armed forces while reducing import dependency. India has significantly ramped up defence exports in recent years, now supplying arms and systems to over 90 countries—a milestone that further emboldens L&T’s global ambitions.

The company is already involved in crucial defence platforms, including the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile and modular bridges tailored for the Indian Army’s mobility in diverse terrains. These projects not only strengthen domestic capability but also represent India’s emergence as a credible exporter of sophisticated defence systems.

Economic Impact and Global Defence Aspirations

With a focus on design innovation, manufacturing scale, and digital integration, L&T is positioning itself as a critical force in India’s journey toward defence self-reliance. Its ventures are expected to boost employment, deepen the defence manufacturing ecosystem, and provide the armed forces with advanced combat-ready platforms.

The company’s defence unit is also laying the groundwork for tapping into lucrative global markets. With the Indian government’s proactive policy push and increasing geopolitical demand for reliable defence partners, L&T is poised to evolve from a national player into a serious global contender in the defence sector.
