LPG Shortage Disrupts Eateries In Cities

A widening commercial LPG shortage has begun disrupting restaurant operations in several Indian cities, including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune and Chennai, as the government prioritises household fuel supply amid broader energy concerns linked to the West Asia conflict. The shortage has forced many eateries to cut menus, reduce kitchen operations and warn of temporary closures.

Commercial LPG Shortage Hits Major Cities

The supply crunch has affected restaurants, small hotels and roadside eateries across multiple urban centres. In Bengaluru, several establishments reported missing commercial cylinder deliveries for two straight days, forcing them to scale back gas-intensive items and ration existing stock. Similar disruptions have been reported in Chennai, where some smaller eateries have temporarily shut operations due to delayed deliveries.

Restaurants Cut Menus And Reduce Operations

In Mumbai and Pune, the shortage has already begun affecting a significant number of food businesses. Restaurants are dropping dishes that require high flames or longer cooking times, while some operators have partially closed kitchens or reduced service hours. Industry groups have warned that if supply delays continue, more outlets may be forced to suspend operations. In some places, reports of black-market sales of commercial cylinders have also emerged, adding to pressure on food businesses.

Government Prioritises Domestic Fuel Supply

The Centre has moved to protect household energy needs by reallocating gas supplies, with priority given to domestic PNG, CNG for transport and LPG production. This has reduced supply availability for several industrial and commercial users. States have also started adjusting gas distribution in coordination with the Union government. While officials have sought to prevent panic and maintain domestic cylinder availability, hospitality sector bodies in several cities have appealed for intervention to restore regular commercial LPG supply.
